Directory of Kenyan Professionals

There are many reasons why every Kenyan professional needs to advertise themselves online. The internet is by far the best networking tool available. Creating a professional profile on Nairobians.Com may lead to many new opportunities, such as:-

- potential recruiters contacting you about job opportunities

- potential clients contacting you about commissioning your services

- colleagues contacting you about networking events or news in your professional field

Many people rely on the internet as a tool that gives them quick information, enabling them to find out about something and to make a decision about buying a product or service. If you are a consultant, potential clients may want to find out more about your work, but how will they do that quickly, easily, and without spending money or time on phone calls or letters? They can type your name into a search engine and find your professional profile right here on Nairobians.Com. If you are an employee, your organisation may not have a website, which puts you at a disadvantage; you may be missing out on short-term contracts, extra work, or consultancy opportunities, simply because potential clients have no way of knowing who you are or what you can do for them.

Furthermore, a potential recruiter or client may find out about you whilst browsing through Nairobians directory, or whilst looking for someone else. You can provide as much or as little information as you like. You can even mention that you are open to new job opportunities or part-time work.

To create your basic profile:

Step 1: Fill in the following information

Surname__________________    First name__________________
Title _____
Profession ___________________________
Educational qualifications __________________________
Institutions attended _______________________________________
Place of work (current) _____________________________________
Past places of work________________________________________
Positions of responsibility ___________________________________
Open to (choose one): Full-time work / Part-time work / Consultancy / None
Contact details ______________________________________

Step 2: Email pros@nairobians.com with the information. If further information is required, your profile will not be published until this information is received. If your profile is accepted, you will receive email confirmation of this and it will appear under the relevant category. It is currently FREE to create a professional profile.

Nairobians.Com - Directory of Kenyan Professionals Terms and Conditions

We want assure anyone browsing your profile that all the information is correct and reliable. This is particularly important if you are seeking new clients/employers or providing a service. It is also important to ensure that there is no identity-fraud, or impersonating of other people. We will treat any instance of fraud or attempted fraud very seriously, and if necessary we will refer such cases to the police. Honest profiles are in the interests of Nairobians.Com readers and consumers or recruiters looking for the services of a professional.

We may therefore ask you to provide evidence of (i) your identity (photocopy of your national identity card or passport), (ii) your education (for post-secondary educational qualifications, we will need a photocopy of certificates relevant to education mentioned on your profile), (iii) your resume: you need to prove that you have worked where you say you have worked by providing photocopies of employment-related letters or work ID-cards.

Individuals in some professions (e.g. medical or legal) may be asked to provide additional proof that they are a certified practitioner; this is to protect the wellbeing of potential clients.

If you choose a profile with a photograph, we will compare the photo on your national identity card or passport with the photo provided, and if we are not satisfied that the two photos are of the same person we will not publish the photograph. We also reserve the right to reject a photo if it contains a mode of dress, pose or background that may be considered inappropriate for the directory.

Wording of profiles may be edited for grammatical correctness and/or punctuation; profiles may not contain slang words or inappropriate language. We reserve the right to reject a profile if we believe that a person’s career or business is contrary to the philosophy or ethics held by Nairobians.Com.

                                                                                  Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a photo to a basic or advanced profile? Yes you can, for an additional charge.

What kind of photo should I choose? A passport-size colour photo is preferrable. Note that we will compare the photo on your national identity card or passport with the photo provided, and if we are not satisfied that the two photos are of the same person we will not publish the photograph. We also reserve the right to reject a photo if it contains a mode of dress, pose or background that may be considered inappropriate for the directory.

Do I have to give my telephone number(s)?
No you don’t, if you don’t want to, only an email address is mandatory.

What if I am unemployed or if I have different roles, what shall I state as my profession? Choose the profession title that best describes what you do. This could be based on your education and/or area of expertise. The more specific you are, the better. For example, if you run a computer software business, state ‘computer software entrepreneur’ as your profession, rather than just ‘business’ or ‘computer business.’

How much is it? 1500/= per annum. Deluxe profiles are 2700/= per annum.

What is a modification? Any change to any section – other than the contact details section (modifications of contact details are free) will cost 10/=. This could be a change to the photo, or the ‘notes’ or resume or education section. Each section that you modify counts as one modification; for example, a change to the name section is one modification, changes to the resume section count as one modification.

Do I have to be a university graduate to have a profile? Absolutely not! Anyone with expertise in a profession counts as a professional; many professions do not require university degrees, such as nursing, teaching, mechanics, catering, and so on.

What are ‘positions of responsibility’? A position of responsibility is something which demonstrates maturity and qualities of leadership. If you believe that something is a position of responsibility, then state it – examples include: being a parent, leading a choir, being a partner in a business, being a volunteer in a charitable organisation, and so on.

What if I have just begun my career, what do I put in the ‘resume’ section? You can state your current role; if you have just finished studying and are looking for work, you can state this in lieu of a resume. Even so, you can mention jobs or roles that you have held in the past – no matter how short-term or how non-relevant they may seem to your current profession. Alternatively, you can choose the basic profile until you build a resume, then choose an advanced or deluxe profile.

What if I change my mind, can I have my profile deleted? Yes; let us know if you no longer wish to have a profile on Nairobians.Com directory of Kenyan professionals. We will then delete your profile and give you a 50% refund, provided the profile has been in existence for 6 months or less.

How do I pay for my profile? Profiles are currently free, for a limited period. After that, you can pay by the annual fee of 1500/= by cheque or crossed postal/money order. We will add your profile only after we receive payment for it.

Can I pay for my profile in instalments? Unfortunately, no. You can only pay the full 1500/= fee, which covers 1 year.

What if I want to upgrade my profile to advanced or deluxe, do I pay extra for modifications? No. You can upgrade for free. For instance, upgrading from basic to advanced will incur no extra cost, irrespective of when in the year you request the upgrade. You will then pay the remaining balance  and continue with the year (which will have commenced when you first subscribe).

What is your policy on confidentiality? Client confidentiality is paramount. We will not divulge any of your details to anyone, beyond what you ask us to publish as part of your profile. For example, if you don’t want your telephone number to be published, we will not give it to anyone. If someone wishing to contact you contacts us, we will advise them to email you using the address on your profile. It is up to you if you wish to respond to them.

Would you advise me to state all my contact details on my online profile? Not all of them, no. We advise that you do not divulge your home telephone number on your online profile. Only divulge your work phone number if your employer/organisation does not mind. A mobile phone number may be more suitable, because of caller display, and because if you had to you could change the number more easily. We also do not advise you to divulge your physical address on your online profile – unless the address is for business premises.

How do you verify that I am who I say I am, can someone impersonate someone else? We will treat any instance of fraud or attempted fraud very seriously, and if necessary we will refer such cases to the police. Honest profiles are in the interests of Nairobians.Com readers and consumers or recruiters looking for the services of a professional. We will therefore ask you to provide evidence of (i) your identity (photocopy of your national identity card or passport), (ii) your education (for post-secondary educational qualifications, we will need a photocopy of certificates relevant to education mentioned on your profile), (iii) your resume: you need to prove that you have worked where you say you have worked by providing photocopies of employment-related letters or work ID-cards.

What if I am not Kenyan, can I still create a professional profile? Yes, if you are resident in Kenya or will be resident in the near future, or if you have ever been a Kenyan citizen, or if you have strong professional interests in Kenya (for example, if you have worked in Kenya or plan to do so, or if you have a business in Kenya).

How will profiles be listed? There will be two sub-directories; your profile will be listed in alphabetic order in the alphabetic sub-directory. Your profile will also be listed under a profession-specific category. For example, if you are a teacher, your profile will be listed under ‘education professionals,’ if you are a management consultant your profile will be listed under ‘management professionals,’ if you are a hairdresser your profile will be listed under ‘cosmetics professionals,’ and so on, as well as being listed alphabetically according to your surname and first name.

Can I have my profile listed in more than one professional category? Yes. If you want to be listed in 2 professional categories, this will count as if you have two profiles, so for example you will pay double for a basic profile listed in 2 different professional categories. Of course, you can vary the wording of each profile if you wish, free of charge. You can also have different profile types in different categories.

Can I design my own profile? No; in order to maintain uniformity, your profile will be based on one of the three designs offered (basic, advanced, or deluxe).
